What’s required to participate in Web-based learning?
If you are not comfortable using a computer, including managing files and folders, or you do not know how to navigate the Web, the first step in preparing for an online course is to improve your general computer skills. Many healthcare institutions provide general computer classes. You may also find classes at your library, local colleges and universities, community centers, or schools.
All that is required to participate in Web-based learning is a computer connected to the Internet. To minimize technical problems, your computer should not be more than three years old and should be PC-compatible (Macintosh computers are not officially supported).
While you do not have to be highly skilled in using computers to be successful in an online course, you do need the skills to perform basic computer tasks. These skills include: 1) knowing how to browse the Web; 2) how to use a Web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, 3) using a word processor such as Microsoft Word; and 4) manage files and folders using a file manager such as Windows Explorer.
BRCN currently uses the Blackboard Learning System (6.3).
